Understanding LED Terms

When choosing an LED sign, there are many important factors to consider.

Pixels:  Signs are made of many tiny LEDs, which are grouped together into larger groups known as pixels.  Smaller pixels are better for close-up viewing. If you are familiar with pixel on a TV, this is very similar.

Pitch: The term pitch refers to the distance from the center of one pixel to another. The more densely packed the pixels,

or the smaller the pitch, the sharper the image appears.

Matrix: is the number of horizontal and vertical pixels, which gives you the physical size of the sign. For example,

a sign that is 40 pixels tall and 80 pixels wide has a matrix of 40x80.

Nit Value:  A unit of measurement of luminance, or the intensity of visible light, where one nit is equal to one candela per square meter. Nits are used to describe the brightness of computer displays, such as LCD and CRT monitors

IP Rating:  or "Ingress Protection" ratings are defined in international standard.  They are used to define levels of sealing effectiveness of electrical enclosures against intrusion from foreign bodies (tools, dirt etc) and moisture.
